About us?
The FFV was created in 1995 as an initiative of the Flavianos and the heirs of Don Flavio Machicado Viscarra. It attained legal status on January 29th, 1997. During the first fifteen years (1995 – 2010), the FFMV focused on the preservation of Las Flaviadas, in addition to other small initiatives and cultural activities.
A second cycle for the FFMV began in 2011, with the consolidation and opening to the public of the Library and Archive. Since then, the main objective has been to catalogue our collections, to provide better access, and to promote research in the Arts, Music and Social Sciences.
The FFMV is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting humanistic education and social responsibility, inspired by the example of life and work of Flavio Machicado Viscarra. To fulfil this mission, the foundation designs programs focused on facilitating free access to information resources in Music, Art and the Humanities.
The members of the foundation aspire to the consolidation of a society built on humanist principles: We affirm the value of individual freedom and the right for each person to develop its full potential.
We consider it important to promote critical and scientific thinking, which is why we are committed to education and free-access to information.
We recognise the transformative power of art and the influence it has on the development of an ethical, respectful and creative way of life for all members of society.
In daily life, we believe it is necessary for individuals to create a legitimate sense of community, leading to proactive action to solve social problems that affect us all.
Flavio was born in La Paz in 1898, the son of Jorge Machicado Silva and Rosa Viscarra Fabre. He began his travels and international education at very young age, first to Lima, then to Santiago de Chile, and finally to the United States and France.
After completing his primary studies, he enrolled in the Harvard Business School (HBS), conceived then as a school for diplomacy and government service on the model of the French Ecole des Sciences Politiques. He could never complete his studies and returned to Bolivia where found his vocation.
By 1931, he married Cristina Saravia Noriega, who became his loyal life companion.
Don Flavio Machicado Viscarra was consistent on what he considered revolutionary ideals: frugal in food and clothes, austere in pleasures, he intensely enjoyed the little things of life. Over time he was recognised by his personal passion for music, embodied in the creation of “Las Flaviadas”, which he had envisioned as early as 1916.
In a time and place where communication was limited and the owners of phonographs were rare, “Las Flaviadas” quickly became a centre for cultural life.
Flavio Machicado Viscarra passed away in 1986, two months short of his eighty-eight birthday and shortly after being decorated with the “Condor de Los Andes”, the highest accolade given by the Bolivian state, and being declared “Favourite Son of the City of La Paz”.
